Surprising Facts About Email

webmail

It’s certainly fair to admit that email is not the new piece of technology on the block, however, it is still thriving and crucial to countless businesses on a daily basis. As a matter of fact, 3.9 billion users sent emails in 2020 and this is expected to rise up to 4.3 billion by 2023!

So many industries rely on the usage of email in order to communicate with fellow colleagues, advertise, offer customer support, provide tracking information, issue useful articles, apologies, important warnings and essential business information.

Email has been a mainstay in the world of business for many, many years and this looks to continually be the case into the future as well.

With this in mind, here in this blog, we are going to outline some of our favourite interesting facts about the medium of email. Read on to find out more!

Around 2.7 million emails are sent every single second

It is estimated that 2,690,160 legitimate emails are sent every second. This amounts to over 200 billion every day. This is over 30 emails for every person on earth, every single day! It goes without saying that not everyone in the world will send up to 30 emails per day. However, lots of businesses send thousands daily and some people do have jobs that call for a huge amount of digital communication.

Around half of your inbox is made up of spam

Spam makes up almost 54% of email traffic, and this probably isn’t too hard to believe. There are highs and lows with regards to these statistics and this figure tends to fluctuate from one month to the next and usually peaks around Christmas.

Hotmail came first as an email client

Hotmail was released on the 4th of July, 1996. Nevertheless, Hotmail wasn’t the first email management program. The first email management tool was developed by Larry Roberts in 1972, and introduced the basic function we still perform with an email list, select, forward, and reply. Later, in 1988, Steve Dorner introduced a graphical user interface to email.

We spend a third of our work time processing our emails

Dealing with emails can be incredibly draining, particularly when it comes to dealing with your work emails.  It is estimated that the typical person will spend up to 28% of work time attending to emails. This works out at around 3 hours per day!

People check their emails from any location

Huge numbers of people start their days by checking emails, either their personal or work inboxes. Due to the fact that email is now accessible via mobile, checking your inbox has become increasingly accessible and easy, these days you’ll spot people checking their email, anywhere!

You can take back what you said (just about)

No doubt plenty of people have felt the gut wrenching feeling of sending an email then realising you have made an error. Chances are you already know this but you are unable to edit an email once it has been sent, however, most email providers now offer an option where you can ‘undo’ the email – which is a source of relief to a great many people!

After you do this you can then edit the email and send it again. After this window of time is up, there’s very little you can do other than send a follow-up. Just remember to turn on ‘undo send’ in your inbox.

60% of your inbox is spam

Email marketing is an incredibly effective medium these days and it’s easy to see why, however, email marketing isn’t always carried out responsibly. It is estimated that almost 60% of all email sent is spam. If you ever take a look at your spam folder, you probably won’t have any issues believing this fact!

People are more likely to open emails with emoji

Emojis are a modern day phenomenon but are very much used in terms of emails these days believe it or not. 56 % of companies who use emojis in their subject lines had more unique opens than companies who didn’t. Sadly, that doesn’t mean you need to use emojis in all of your emails every time you send a marketing email. Emojis certainly aren’t widely used or deemed appropriate in professional, corporate work environments – so tread with caution.

Emails can cause stress

This is probably a rather unsurprising fact but the typical person will check their inbox up to 15 times a day. This isn’t too shocking, considering one of our previous facts about how frequently and easily you can check your emails. Doing so certainly comes with a  significant cognitive load; it can take you up to 15 minutes to get back to full speed when you come back to getting on with your work after checking emails.

Email continues to remain popular and widely used

The increase of messaging channel apps and other online messaging services hasn’t caused a threat to email’s dominance as the main form of Internet-based communication. In 2021, emails are still widely used by 81% of small businesses said that they still depend very much on email communication as their main acquisition channel, with 80 % saying they also rely on email for retention too!
